American White Pelican

My son and I went kayaking on Lake Meredith the other morning. We paddled across the lake from Harbor Bay to Martin’s Canyon and then southwest down the shoreline and into the Canadian River Channel. We had gotten just about as far as we could (kayaks were started to bottom out in the mud) when we spotted this lone American White Pelican in with the Ring-billed Gulls, Great Blue Herons, and Great Egrets. We are lucky enough to be in the migration route between the Great Salt Lake and the Gulf coast. I see AWPEs every spring and fall on the lake, One year I counted over 60 of the birds from one vantage point at Fritch Fortress.

Here’s a picture of some of the big flock that I saw at Fritch Fortress a few years ago. It’s cool how they move in unison, herding the fish into a group, their heads bobbing up and down like sewing machines, as they eat.American White Pelican (5)-001 (1024x674)
