Green Heron

I saw this Green Heron at Spring Canyon a few days ago. They are migrants through here each fall and spring. They aren’t very big, only about a foot and a half tall with their neck stretched out and they weigh about half a pound. This one was preening, although he did make a grab…

First Days of Summer

I drove up to Palo Duro Lake yesterday, a small lake about an hour’s drive north of my house. The lake itself is nearly dried up, but it is still a pretty good place to bird. Eastern Kingbird Mississippi Kite. I saw this Green Heron this morning at Lake Meredith’s Bugbee Canyon.

Birding and Kayaking

Birding has been pretty slow around here for the last month. Well, not exactly slow-there are lots of birds around, it’s just that they are the same birds I’ve photographed and posted dozens times this summer, so I’ve not really been motivated to take a lot of photos. The good news is that the lake…

Mid-summer

Well, it’s a few days past the mid-point of summer and birding has been a bit slow around here. There are still lots of birds around, but it is either too early or too late for migration so I haven’t seen anything different for several weeks. Also, mating season is winding down, so the males…

A Hunting Green Heron

We’ve finally gotten some much needed rain the last two weeks, but it has slowed my birding and kayaking quite a bit. Here’s a Green Heron hunting and fishing in the flooded beach at the Stilling Basin, a large pond below the dam at Lake Meredith in the Canadian River wetlands.

Birds, Boats, and Beautiful Weather

We’ve had a rather dry summer so far this year, a return to the drought of the last decade or so, only not quite as bad as it was before. We were fortunate to have a really wet summer last year and our local lake went from nearly gone to about 25% capacity.  It’s still…

A Couple of Waders

There has been an American Bittern at Spring Canyon for the last week or so and I’ve been trying to get better pictures than the long distance ones that I posted last week. I got my chance this morning. There was actually two of them, but the other one was hidden in the cattails and…

Birding and Kayaking

I finally got the nerve up to take my camera out with me on the kayak. A few days ago I bought a water-proof bag large enough to put it and the 500mm lens into, and this morning I packed everything up and headed for the lake. I’ve been exploring the south end of the…

Sunrise and a Green Heron

I made it out to Spring Canyon this morning a little after sunrise and was rewarded with these pictures of a Green Heron.  The water reflects the background in the early light, green around the cattails, golden from dry grass, copper from the red clay bluffs, and silver from the concrete of the spillway.  The…

Summer Doldrums

The weather has been great this week in Hutchinson County.  Temperatures have dropped from upper 90s and low 100’s to 70s and 80s and it rained an inch or more over the last week.  Unfortunately we are still at about half our normal precipitation for the year so far. My first photos from Lake Meredith…
