Sittin’ in the Yard Drinking Beer

Today was a beautifully mild summer day, a real treat from the blazing hot, dry summer we’ve had so far. It rained last night and was cloudy most of today with a high temp around 90. I took advantage of the weather and went kayaking this morning and mowed this afternoon. After mowing I sat…

Last Pictures from the Missouri Trip

Here’s the last of the photos from our vacation to southwestern Missouri. Most were taken from the back porch of my parent’s house. Tufted Titmoue Red-bellied Woodpecker Red-bellied Woodpecker and a Northern Cardinal White-breasted Nuthatch American Robin and young Eastern Bluebird Eastern Phoebe Blue Jay Downy Woodpecker Indigo Bunting

McBride Canyon

I hiked down McBride Canyon a few days ago and was able to get a few more photographs of the Western Scrub Jays that I saw last week. I also took a couple of pictures of a Downy Woodpecker, the smallest woodpecker in the US. He’s also very twitchy and never seems to stay still…

New Bird

There are a lot of things I like about birding- anticipating returning birds (not long until the Mississippi Kites and Swainson’s Hawks and all the summer songbirds return,) watching nesting birds (I’m keeping and eye on two Red-tailed Hawk nests,) and watching territorial and mating displays (Hooded Mergansers and Buffleheads are pretty funny.)  I enjoy…

More Spring Birds

Missouri

Sheila and Claire and I wandered a bit further than usual last week and ended up in southwestern Missouri to visit my Dad and his wife, Mary Lee.  Instead of the interstate, we decided to take US 60 through northern Oklahoma.  Oklahoma roads aren’t the greatest, but we had a nice drive for the most…

Northern Harrier

Well, it’s been nearly 2 weeks since I posted, sorry about that, I just haven’t been able to find the time to get everything organized for a new post.  I have been busy taking photos, though, and have a lot to post today.  It’s been a pretty interesting 2 weeks for birding.  In the last…

Blue Jay Day

We were treated to a cool front last night, a much needed break from the panhandle heat.  It rained all around us but we only got a few sprinkles.  I went walking  this morning at the City Park and took these photos of some Blue Jays that were fussing with each other.  There were 6…

City Park

I’ve been visiting Fritch’s City Park pretty regularly for several years.  At first just to walk; 6 times around the perimeter is 3 miles and takes about an hour at my FOG (Fat Old Guy) speed and, since last year, to bird.  It’s not a highly developed kind of park.  There are swing sets and…
