Waterfowl

Spring Canyon has 4 ponds of differnt sizes, a half-mile long slough and acres and acres of wetlands. This spring has been one of the best for birds there since I started birding nearly 5 years ago. Heres a few of the waterfowl I saw out there last week. Northern Shoveler Common Merganser American Coot

Scaled Quail

I ran across these Scaled Quail at Fritch Fortress the other morning. Scaled Quail (or Blue Quail as they are called around here) aren’t as common in this area as the Bobwhites are and so I was happy to be able to get a few photos of them.  The morning was very overcast and so…

Time Flies

Time sure gets away from me.  I’ve not published anything in a month.  I have been birding, just not as much as usual, lots of things vying for my time.  Some of the them I wish I could just skip, work and mowing spring to mind.  Others are things I should have been doing all…

Watercolors

The day after we got back from Missouri we had our first real rain since last summer.  The next morning I went out to Spring Canyon to see if there was anything interesting down there.  While we were in Missouri an itinerant birder had posted on eBird that he had heard a Black Rail and…

What the Wind Blew In

Did I mention that it’s been windy on the high plains this spring?  Spring usually is, but this year has been especially so.  I’ve lost count of the days that wind speeds have topped 30 mph sustained and today is going to top that again, with gusts up to 70 mph according to the weathermen.…

Mergansers

Common Mergansers are a common sight at Lake Meredith each winter, and although I haven’t seen  nearly as many this year as last, I have had several opportunities to photograph them the last few months.  Unfortunately, it’s not just the mergansers, all waterfowl populations have been down.  Populations of Red-tailed Hawks, Bald Eagles, Northern Harriers,…

Common Merganser

There have been lots of Common Mergansers at Meredith this winter.  The drakes never seem to bee close enough to get photos of, but this female wasn’t at all shy.  I rarely see one out of the water.  She sat there and preened for 15 minutes and then walked back to the water and swam…

More Photos from 2013

Here’s a few more photos from the last 5 or 6 weeks of 2013.  I failed my resolve to post more often. I could cite a number of reasons but they would just be rationalizations.   Basically, I’m just lazy and there are too many things to do instead of this.  I go out birding…

Lingering Waterfowl

There’s hardly any water birds on Lake Meredith now and there aren’t any playas with water in them that I know of in the northern Texas panhandle (edit: just read on eBird of one north of St. Francis, east of Hwy136 that I’ll try to visit next week when I’m off.)  Strangely, the waterfowl that…
