Roadrunners, Woodpeckers, Teals, and Gulls

Last week was really a pretty nice week for birding in the Texas Panhandle. I saw a lot of birds and roamed over a large chunk of the central Texas panhandle.  The weather was pretty nice and I had good company when I wanted it and made a few solo runs when I wanted that.…

This Week at Lake Meredith

I’m seeing lots of migrants through Hutchinson Co., now, and some summer birds have arrived as well. Virginia Rails and Soras can be heard almost daily in the marshes below the dam in Spring Canyon. I saw Say’s and Eastern Phoebes at Spring Canyon and at McBride and Blue-winged and Cinnamon Teals on the Stillin…

Early Morning at Spring Canyon

Here’s few more photographs from an early morning at Spring Canyon last week. Enjoy. American Coots have strange feet-large, with lobed toes instead of webbing. These coots are hobnobbing with a trio of Pied-billed Grebes. Greater Yellowlegs

There was a single Greater Yellowlegs at Spring Canyon a few mornings ago.  Except for some Killdeer, that have a much broader habitat, these are the first shorebirds I’ve seen at Meredith this year.  The birds are probably there, but because of the larger lake that makes the shallows inaccessible to us boatless folks, fewer…

Ups and Downs

After a rough week at work (put is nearly 70 hours in 4 days) I finally got a chance to get out and bird this morning. I drove up to Palo Duro Lake north of Spearman, Texas and was able to  get a few nice photos of some Northern Bobwhites. It’s amazing what a couple…

Rainy Day at Palo Duro Lake

When I left my house the weather was clear, no wind, a beautiful sunrise.  By the time a got to the lake an hour or so later it was very cloudy and raining on and off.  It continued to rain until I left the lake. By the time I got home it was clear again.…

More Photos from 2013

Here’s a few more photos from the last 5 or 6 weeks of 2013.  I failed my resolve to post more often. I could cite a number of reasons but they would just be rationalizations.   Basically, I’m just lazy and there are too many things to do instead of this.  I go out birding…

Songbirds and Shorebirds

All last week I thought I had to work today but a last second reprieve (thanks, Rochelle) found me out at the lake this morning on one of those panhandle rarities, a windless day.  I took full advantage of it and walked several miles, the first good walk I’ve had since last fall.  I spent…
